About Silver Spring MD
Silver Spring is named after a mica-flecked spring that was discovered in the area by Francis Preston Blair in 1840. He later purchased much of the land around. The original spring is thought to have been in Acorn Park, just south of downtown.
The oldest and most urbanized area of the community is the downtown, which is located near the tip of Washington DC. Many mixed-use developments that combine retail, residential, and office space have been constructed since 2004’s significant renaissance. Many inner suburban neighborhoods are located within the Capital Beltway, which surrounds Downtown.
From west to east, Silver Spring’s borders are divided by four major streams: Rock Creek (Sligo Creek), Long Branch (Northwest Branch), and Long Branch (both from the northwest). There are parks surrounding each park that offer hiking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, picnic spots, and tennis courts. Bicycling is possible in these parks during weekends when the roads are closed.
Silver Spring is in Maryland’s southeastern Montgomery County. It is close to Washington DC. It is considered an edge city, even though it is not officially incorporated. Silver Spring is fourth in Maryland after Baltimore, Columbia, and Germantown. It is also the second-most populous county after Germantown.
