Cockroaches
Contrary to famous belief, cockroaches don’t just like messy homes. Cockroaches will move indoors in winter to escape the cold and warmth. A plan is essential to control cockroaches in your apartments, condos, or other homes during winter. Your strategy should include eliminating three essential elements that cockroaches require to survive: warmth, food, and water. You must ensure that water is included to prevent cockroaches from finding what they need to stay.
Spiders
Winter is when spider infestations increase in homes because other pests seek warmth and shelter in your warm home. You can take steps to prevent spider nests and webs from growing around your home. Firewood logs should be kept away from your home. Clear away leaves and debris from your yard and around the house—seal cracks and crevices in your home’s structure, including foundations, windows, and doors. To reduce nesting areas, you can reduce or eliminate piles of paper, boxes, and other clutter. To eliminate spiders from your home, you must destroy their food source. You can eliminate their food source, and they cannot enter your home.
Rats and Mice
In the winter months, rodent infestations are more common. To overwinter, rats and mice can enter crawlspaces, attics, and living spaces. Rodents can make squealing noises inside walls and ceilings. Many homeowners find droppings under and in drawers and closets and other areas that are not easily accessible. These cunning creatures can cause damage to your home and expose you to diseases like rat-bite fever and salmonella. This pest problem must be addressed immediately, as rats can produce up to 12 kittens per 23 days, and mice can reproduce up to 60 pups per 90 days.
Nuisance Wildlife
As the temperatures drop and food supplies become scarcer, nuisance wildlife will look for a more comfortable home. Common winter nuisance wildlife that can enter your home is raccoons and squirrels. They can be found in basements, attics, and any other area of your home that provides a haven. Squirrels, and other nuisance wildlife, aren’t just looking to shelter for winter. They also use your home to raise their young and to breed. Unlike rodents that scavenge food in your home, adult squirrels will leave your house daily to find food outside and return daily to feed their offspring. Once inside, they create nests and forage for food in the evenings when you’re asleep.
